Investing in gold/silver help?

Options
hi,

the us dollar is going to collapse because the value of the dollar is getting lower and lower hence the high prices we see everywhere to compensate the devalue of the dollar.

the uk money system is similar to the usa system and i think the pound will collapse soon after the dollar crash.

gold and silver never loses its value and i believe they are going up in prices.

when paper money collapses it will be useless and it will only good for burning like firewood.

since paper money is not backed by gold and silver i want to know how do i invest in these valuable materials before its too late?

thanks,

being prepared for the great depression to come

Currency values go up and down in relation to one another. This is normal, and hardly means that all currencies are going to crash. If they do, I figure there's a lot more to worry about than whether you have a few lumps of metal that no-one has any money to buy from you!

Gold recently dropped by over 20% and is recovering from that as we speak. Whoever told you that it never loses its value was clearly mistaken! As an additional bit of information, there are often long periods where cash accounts actually outperform gold in terms of capital accumulation.

I think you mean "if", not "when". There is no reason to suggest that our monetary system is in danger of collapsing any time soon.

If you want to invest and are doing so because of paranoia about the state of the economy, then the only way you could really invest in gold and silver safely would actually be to buy it up and keep it in a safe. Pretty much any other way you invest will rely on you buying in to a fund which tracks the commodity, which would almost certainly not get you any return whatsoever if the economy totally died in a way which would result in money becoming worthless all of a sudden.

Personally I think you should give less credence to the doomsayers and just live your life rather than worrying! Constantly worrying about claims that a new great depression is around the corner will just stress you out needlessly.

If that were to happen, the few bits of gold you had stashed away would only be of use to buy food and other basics.

As Aegis writes, your only realistic option in the more apocalyptic scenarios is to hold the physical metal. You can buy coins and bullion from the likes of Chard and Baird.

If you just want exposure to the prices of gold and silver there are various trackers available.

Try researching ETF's and ETC's in Gold, Silver and other precious metals . The morningstar.co.uk site is a good starting point. Very volatile high risk, so be warned.

These would normally be my first recommendation too, but if someone's worried about the downfall of economies, it's unlikely that they'd be prepared to essentially take an IOU for a small portion of gold.

You can trade gold and silver spot prices (long and short) in the same way you would any other forex market (your basically trading the gold/silver against the USD)... I use Oanda (US based) they also let you buy as little as 1 unit so its a great way for a smaller investors to dip their toe in the water. I would however be very careful following a buy and hold on any commodity at the moment, as with most markets once the general public catch on the best gains are probably behind you. As always though do your own research.

I would just add that you need to have a stop loss price where you get out, as has been said before all currencies can move hard and fast.

my mate studies economics at university said that the dollar will be replace by the 'amero'. similar to the 'euro' for europe.

he also told me to check out the video at youtube:

it seems theres undisputable evidence to make this video a fact and not a theory.
