If so it is woefully unfair, as a statute of limitations applies even to murder - after six years it is treated as a spent conviction. I cannot believe past money problems are treated less leniently than murder?

    Can anyone assist?
Don't be so ridiculous. Murder never becomes a spent conviction.
  • As I was saying on another thread - honesty is the best policy.

If you pretend your finances are great, and a credit check says otherwise, then you lied and your integrity is compromised.

But if your finances are lousy because you are broke, and you are open about this, and demonstrate you understand the problem by saying you are paying off your debts - then you have shown yourself to be an honest person with the ability to deal with difficult situations.

See? Same lousy credit report - two very different assessments of your character! :)

I'm aware a "cut-off" rule applies so that any money problems older than six years are not taken into account when applying for credit now. If applying for a job with a bank, are old, historic, money problems taken into account, as I had a CCJ in 1988 shortly after leaving university. I mentioned this to the recruiter when on a second-stage interview for working in a bank: she said something that old would probably be discounted and not to worry about it. On her advice I therefore treated the application form as only pertaining to the past six years and filled it in accordingly. As I have been allowed credit in the past six years - credit card and overdraft facilities - and have only occassionally been late with repayments - I assume any problems from 24 years ago are forgotten and will not be held against me, in fact legally cannot be held against me.

Is this the case and will they go back this far?

the thread is old and i hope the OP passed the credit check by now
  • DVardysShadow already pointed out the age of the thread.

But the problem remains pertinent. Credit checks are still part of the recruitment process for bank and insurance company call-centre jobs. And a lot of us - who in the past wouldn't have touched that kind of employment with a barge pole - are now in a position where we might have to think about it. Me included, sadly.
