I painted my kitchen cupboard doors yesterday, early afternoon. They're solid wood and I used Dulux Satinwood paint. Covered in one coat as it said on the tin but today the paint it still tacky to the touch.Surely it should be properly dried by now ?
(I prepared surfaces by rubbing back etc.)

Well, I've been glossing skirting boards and doors for 4 nights and it's still a bit soft 24 hours later. It takes a while for all the solvents to evaporate. Good excuse to stop and drink beer instead (I'm bored with painting!).Happy chappy0

It does say on the tin 'drying time 16 hours' ............oh well, have to wait and see. Just that I've got a larder cupboard yet to paint and am loathe to start it if its just not going to dry properly.
Don;t blame you for stopping for a beer (or several)...........think I'd be well fed up after all that time.:beer:Mary

I was once a Rep for Dulux, many moons ago!
Assuming the paint is new and not been in the shed for 5 years, if the wood has already got a solid finish to it, such as a lacquer or oil based paint, what happens is the surface becomes reasonably dry, but the underneath remains fluid. This is because the surface films over preventing the solvents from escaping thru it they it, and they cannot soak in to the wood because of the sealed surface there. So combined, it basically means the solvents are trapped and it takes longer to cure. It will go off, just leave it a bit longer.
This also explains why paint is "touch dry" in X hours, but not "recoatable" for XX hours.

Thanks woody...............it was a brand new pot of paint.......bought it on Friday.
The cupboard doors did have a colour wash on them years ago and I rubbed back as far as I could. They're still a bit tacky but not as much as yesterday.Mary

Mary, just a thought, you didnt put the ;paint on too thick did you? That can make a LOT of difference as well.

I had this problem a couple of years ago.I painted the woodwork in the bathroom and 3 days later it was still wet,wet enough to leave your fingerprint mark
apparently according to my friends hubby (he thinks he knows everything) is it was because i didnt stir the paint before use to remove the pigment that was sunk to the bottom and the top part of the tin contained more of the oil thats in gloss.0 -
woody - well I did one door and the lad I foster did the other two doors.......he might have put it on thicker than he should.
Don;t think it was gloss paint I had though........just says on the tin that its Satinwood and the lady in the shop said it would be fine for what I wanted.
Said it covered in one coat, no need to stir.
The tin/pot was a funny shaped one, sort of curved in the middle, supposed to be easier to handle (which it was).
I always thought there was only vynyl or matt emulsion and satinwood was a gloss but then things change don't they so I just went by the colour and the instructions.Mary

I had this probelm some years ago and after several days called Dulux who admitted my tin was part of a faulty batch. They said it would dry but could take several more days and they sent me some vouchers. Sooner have had the paint dry quicker so I could of shut the door and window as it was in my main hall!A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build.
