Earn interest? When, unless you have a healthy revloving balance of at least £5k then the interest isn't worth the processing power of the banks data server.
Hell, I earned £1.34 worth of interest once, woopy do, I could have earned that by buying Tesco's own make washing up liquid instead of fairy.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

have you contacted them, and what did they say
Well this is normal, it is a way of earmarking the funds for the transaction on Monday, no probs cos I have a handle on my finances, I do agree with your point with regard to money coming out before it is due, this is in breach of the DD mandate T&C's and you are entitled to a full refund in that case, only if they have actually taken the coin and not just earmarked it.

no i havent financially lost anything, but the money has left my account early and it just the principal of taking the money before they can
It hasn't left your account, they've just stopped you from potentially withdrawing money needed for the DD the working day before it's due.

Would you prefer them not to do this, then charge you lots for going OD if you did inadvertantly withdraw too much?

You could always cancel the DD and pay[1] by SO/Cheque/cash.

[1] I'm under the vague impression that Virgin are one of the companies that charge extra for the privilege of paying by any method that isn't a DD/CPA. I really need to speak to the OH about this...
