Sorry but PoM is prescription only medicine and P is pharmacy only.

Baby aspirin has PoM next to it in the BNF.

I know that POM is prescription only medicine. I never said it wasn't. However, aspirin dispersible 75mg is a pharmacy medicine.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • Well thanks to everyone who replied - I went out to a supermarket (with a chemist within it) last night and asked the pharmacist if they sold it and they did! 88p for 100 :j

So it's definitely available without prescription despite what the BNF says.

    Thanks again :D
  • I suffer with asthma too - but I know that it is a definite No No for some sufferers to take aspirin. If OP suffers with asthma, recommend BIG time that you check out whether you can take aspirin. Not worth the risk.

I've been taking normal aspirin all my life - it doesn't have any bad effects with me. I already knew that aspirin is bad for asthmatics but you're wise to make a point of that here in case anyone else reads this and wants to try it for the first time.

Which supermarket was it? You normally only get a small pack in Boots etc.

    I could stock up!

I've bought the 75mg aspirin from Boots and Tesco - both from 'behind the counter'.
Tesco is superior in taste though - anyone remember the 'Junior Aspirin' we used to be given as kids? ;)
    :j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

Sainsburys. It's quite a large store with a pharmacy inside and the tablets have the Sainsburys own brand label on them.

Otherwise ask your GP to presribe a large amount so that you don't end up paying more prescription charges.
Your GP will assess your cardiovascular risk. If not high enough (a good thing for you), then will probably not prescribe.

there are many benefits to taking aspiring for some people, the majority of them are cardiovascular: reducing risks of heart attacks, strokes etc...
There are also a number of side effects/ risks: bleeding from the stomach etc.
For some people the benefits outweigh the risks: in such instances a GP will prescribe aspirin. In others when the risks are higher than the benefits, or when there is no proven reason to prescribe (e.g. an otherwise fit 30 year old who wants to take a low dose aspirin because they think it is beneficial to their health), then it is unlikely that to Gp will prescribe.
