75mg Baby Aspirin - where to buy?

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can buy this over the counter in chemists/supermarkets? I've looked in my usual supermarket and there is only the 300mg pain relief type. I didn't really want to have to ask for it as then I'd have to tell them why I want it.

Thanks :)

It isn't called baby aspirin anymore as aspirin is now not recommended for children under 16. I think the one you mean is the 75mg dispersible aspirin that come in a pack of 100. You will only be able to purchase these from a pharmacy or a supermarket that has a pharmacy and you will have to ask for them.

They ask you why you want them for a reason - they shouldn't be given to children and they shouldn't be taken by asthmatics, to name but 2 reasons.

You should be able to buy 75mg Aspirin OTC though.

I obviously didn't make myself clear. I didn't want to ask a supermarket assistant who would direct me to the 300mg and ask why on earth I would want a lower dose!

I don't mind asking a chemist if I know they definitely sell them.

I was under the impression that 75mg had become prescription only, it certainly states that in the current BNF (British National Formulary). I do not know the logic behind this. They definately used to be available and this is only a recent thing.
You can look it up on bnf.org.uk, the symbol PO next to a drug (the actual formulation, eg 75mg) means prescription only.

The best way to find out would be to pop in to your pharmacist and ask them! If you need them then you will be prescribed them anyway, so if you get free prescriptions it won't matter. Otherwise ask your GP to presribe a large amount so that you don't end up paying more prescription charges.

Aspirin dispersible 75mg tablets are still available to buy from any pharmacy (must ask). They are a Pharmacy Only medicine (PO). Many people purchase these with no questions asked.

I've just checked on he Boots website and they cost £1.19. Check here

I'm asthmatic and when I asked my doctor if I should take 75mg before a long flight she didn't say that I shouldn't.

I bought mine over the counter in Boots, then I bought them again over the counter in Superdrug when I couldn't find the ones from Boots. I now have enough for about fifteen lifetimes!

I suffer with asthma too - but I know that it is a definite No No for some sufferers to take aspirin. If OP suffers with asthma, recommend BIG time that you check out whether you can take aspirin. Not worth the risk.

Sorry but PoM is prescription only medicine and P is pharmacy only.

Baby aspirin has PoM next to it in the BNF.
