Endorsing a cheque?

My sons have a large balance each in Yorkshire Building Society accounts. I wanted to put some in investment plans with Foreign and Colonial.
I asked F&C the best way of transferring the money and they said counter cheques made payable to F&C Management Ltd.
I took that to Yorkshire Building Society who issued the cheques, and then posted the applications off to F&C.
They were returned because the F&C said the cheques needed to be endorsed. I took them back to Yorkshire BS who had no idea what they meant by endorsing the cheque.
Came home and rang F&C who said the cheques needed to show the accounts the money came from.
Went back to Yorkshire BS who said the account numbers are already printed on the front of the cheque, so I sent them off again with a note explaining this.
Got the cheques back again because they are not endorsed. When I called again, this time I was told I needed Yorkshire BS to put their official stamp on the back, the account details of where it was drawn from, and the cashiers signiture.
Went back to Yorkshire BS who did this, and I posted them off again.

I can't ring today as they are only open weekdays. Has anyone any idea what endorsing a cheque means, and what I should be doing with them?
It's a 28 mile round trip plus parking to get to Yorkshire BS, so I'm a bit narked at having to keep going back, and to be honest I'm wondering if it'll be easier forgetting about F&C and just putting the money back in the boys cash savings accounts.

It requires the signature of the account holder on the back of the cheque. Have a look here for details ( bottom of page 7 ).0

Its not F&C being difficult. This is a standard requirement. The cheque has to be drawn on an account in the name of the person that the investment is for.
Some building societies do not put the account holders name on their counter cheques and this is quite a common problem. The stamp on the back of the cheque with the account holders name shown is a common way of resolving this. Another is to get the cheque payable to yourself and put it in your current account and write a cheque drawn on your own account.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
