  • I work from the house and have been allowed tax relief over a period of years against a proportion of my household expenses eg maintenance and repairs, heating and lighting etc . It is my main residence. NO specific room in the house has been set aside as my working room. When I come to sell the house will I have to pay any capital gains tax on the house sale?

Is their a tutorial site written by HM Govt or so else showing how to complete the online forms? Is it easy to abandon any online forms you have made a pigs ear of, and start again?

  • I have my own car, but have a company credit card which I use for all of my petrol, private and business. I keep records of all journeys and fuel costs, so I can calculate costs for the year, but how do I represent this on my tax forms. I always get different answers from the tax office. I am a higher rate tax payer
  • I suspect that I have missed the deadline for any possible appeal, but.........it's worth a try on this forum. I worked in the U.S. for 13 months from May, 1998. I didn't pay have to pay tax there, provided that I left the U.S. within two years. Returned to the U.K. Then set about trying to find out whether my income in the U.S. as an instructor would be tax free under something called the 'Teacher Treaty' between the two countries. To cut a long story short I received a final ruling here in December, 1999 ( after my case was handed from Glasgow to Newcastle to London Tax Departments for a decision ) to pay back about £9000 in tax. Received the normal personal rebate, but nothing else eg. costs of commuting back to the U.K. every two months for a fortnight.
I'd appreciate any comments/ answers on this matter, even if it is to confirm what I suspect.
  • Is the cost of computer software used in the course of a business a tax deductible expense at all, considering the significant costs of keeping up to date of the required software is in the region of £800 a year?

    Many thanks
  • This thread is closed now but watch out for the article!
  • Am I too late to ask a question?
If not, then please advise whether a (New Zealand) self-employed person living and filing returns in the UK has to put on that return that they worked back in New Zealand for 2 months during the year as an employee with full tax deducted at source?

    many thanks
  • This thread has been turned into the article Taxing Times.
  • I want to express my appreciation for the help and advice I've been given. The answer has really taken a load off my mind. I just can't tell you how relieved I am, and grateful for the effort and thought you and your Uncle have put into the matter. :T :T :T
  • Is there anywhere in which I can find out what you can claim for, e.g. interest on your mortgage, to offset the rent received and then subsequently taxed by the taxman! I have not submitted my return yet and wondered if there was any info to help with the offsets.
