NU 14 for 12 mths Car Insurance - Not all it seems

Just called Norwich Union using a special 14 months for price of 12 car insurance phone number on their website. You might also have seen this advertised on TV.

I gave all the relevant info, and was advised my quote would be £290 for 12 months. I stated that I thought I got 14 months cover. The guy at the call centre seemed a bit irritated and told me I should have told him at the beginning of the call I wanted the 14 months offer.

Anyway, after a few minutes, he comes back with a quote of £309 for 14 months. I asked why there was a price difference if they advertised 14 months for the price of 12 surely the price should be the same? He could not offer any explanation, so I asked to speak with a manager.

A couple of minutes later, he comes back and says his manager is in a meeting currently, but I could call back later to speak with someone.

Now I should say £309 is not a bad price for 14 months cover - but should I just pay up, or stick to my guns and pursue this? Does anyone know of a valid reason for the difference? Perhaps Trading Standards might be interested.

If I ever get an explanation from management, I'll post later.

If you're happy to sell it to me at a price I am happy to pay - then I want it cheaper.

  • OK, finally got to speak with a manager. was advised the £290 quote was a 'system error'. ::) So both quotes should have been £309 - however, as a gesture of goodwill they would send me a cheque for £20 if I took out the policy.

Sounded fair enough - so I asked him just to run through and confirm all the details. All was well until we got to the excesses. £520 accidental damage excess. He said it so quickly I had to ask him to repeat it.

Obviously they had set the excess so high as it was the only way they could beat my renewal quote. Oh well, lesson learned. Looks like its e-sure for me again.

I was thinking about doing the same deal with 14 for the price of 12with NUI.

I was talking to my friend and he advised that all the claims are handled in India and are a complete nightmare.

Not what you want if you need your car back asap.

I have got NU rescue from them and had to call the India cust service sentre for a new welcome pack and that was bad enough.
