No Sound from PC speakers

Can anyone please advice. My Pc blew up last week, due I think to a surge, though Norweb dispute this, and yes I now have surge protection. Got my pc back today, new PSU ,and motherboard etc. Got everything working except the speakers. They are plugged in to both pc and mains and lit up but no sound is coming out. Could the sound card have gone too, or is there another explanation?
Thanks

Is it actually plugged into a separate sound card or is it an integrated sound chip on the motherboard? Do you know what motherboard you've got? Something like belarc advisor could tell you.

Last time I had this problem it was because the computer company hadn't fitted the jumpers properly on the motherboard.

Thanks. I don't know, as I don't understand these things. The IT guy at work did it for me. I can ask him monday. If it isn't the sound card could the speakers have blown?
    Thanks

It's possible. The best way is to try eliminating the possible sources of the problem. Try the speakers elsewhere (plug into headsocket of hi fi etc), or maybe easier to try plugging something else into the PC such as headphones to see if there's still no sound.

check to see if the drivers are installed many fitters fail to do this.
See if u can find out what mainboard has been fitted(did u get the box/manual), check companies website support section for what sound chip it uses then look in device manager (sound, video game controllers) to see if its listed there

Shoot me down for stating the obvious; have you looked @ the volume control settings to make sure that it's not turned down / muted.

I had this problem the other day after a re-install of windows . When I checked the sound settings by clicking on the advanced tab (bottom left) uncheck the digital output only and mine worked after that.

Are the speakers plugged in to the right socket on the back of the PC?

Check the properties of the sound devices:
Start -> control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager

Look on the list you'll see, near the bottom usually, for an entry called 'sound, video and game controllers', click the little + sign if you need to, check there's no ! or ?'s listed next to the entries.
Also list the entries on here or past a screen shot of it, some one should be able to tell you if it all appears to be installed.

One other obvious check, are you sure you have plugged the speakers into the correct sockets on the motherboard/soundcard .. it is amazing how many plug into the input instead of the output (hangs head in shame .. had me confused for a couple of days ;))
