I have had a petrol strimmer for a few years and while it may seem an extravagance at 1st its not. Its not fussy about the old petrol I put in it and uses a tiny amount. It fires up each year without complaint. Its very powerful and as I have a lot of obstacles in my garden it saves a lot of time.

I have had several electric ones and they all failed, the main problem is the electric motor is down the bottom and relies on sucking cooling air through it. Its only a matter of time before dust, grass and moisture kill it. The petrol ones have the engine at the top well away from contamination and will outlast several electric ones, saving money long term.

the amount of electric strimmers that i have got through over the years because the motors wear out or the line does not feed properly,
hope this will sort that out.

Tesco emailled me this morning at 0603 to say this was back in stock, but when I checked at 0800, no stock :(

Are petrol strimmers heavier than electric ones? Weight is an issue for me as I have a bad back.

We need a new strimmer as our electric one has a piece broken off (not bad for 8 years wear - longest we've ever kept one for).

I did buy a Flymo in Focus yesterday reduced to £21.99 but haven't used it yet so if the petrol is better I could return it and buy a petrol.

Looking at the two i would say you have made the right choice.

About the weight, probably a bit heavier but totally different as they are balanced (or should be) from the handle you have the weight of the pole and cutting head on one side, the engine at the top on the other side so it seesaws. electric ones have all the weight down the bottom. I find my petrol one balances nicely at my hip, word of advice wear something long sleeved and old, as the engine can get pretty hot and the 2 stroke mixture makes the exhaust a bit smelly which can make nice clothes smell a bit oily.

Also mine has a bump line feed, everytime the line gets a bit short or snaps I just 'bump' the head on the floor the spin speed feeds a bit more out, a shielded cutter blade in the cover then catches any excess and trims it to the ideal length so I don't ever need to stop!
