Huh, derek, you think you've got problems? Husband and self also have exemplary record re credit cards/loans/you name it. I rang our bank (the Co-op) with some minor query and got chatting with a guy who was dead keen for us to apply for their 6 month 0% purchases only CC. The fact that we had recently done BTs on our cards (leaving them totally cleared) to Egg might have had something to do with his enthusiasm. ::)

Being the cautious peeps that we are, we decided we did'nt want separate cards, so requested one card in my husband's name with me as additional user. As this was all being done on the phone, the Co-op guy told us what our credit limit would be(£3000).

When my husband told him that was way more than we needed he promptly asked would we like more! My husband said no thanks, was told that all was fine and that we'd receive something to sign, in a day or two, then we'd receive the card.

(Sorry that this is turning into a bit of a screed, but I'm fuming.)

A week later and still no 'something to sign' so I rang them only to be told a letter was 'on the way'. When I queried the delay, I was told(reluctantly) that we'd been turned down and that we should contact Experian! We've been trying all weekend to register and pay online for a credit report but, as stated above, the site 'could not provide a report at the moment'.

Eventually, earlier this evening, we were able to access the site, and order a report. The thing is, as I've already stated, we are rock-steady financially and always have been. In view of that, having to pay for a credit report, AND wait seven days for it, is infuriating, especially as our phone application was treated as perfectly straightforward, plus we were offered more than we wanted and declined.

We always check our statements assiduously, which is not difficult as they're never more than half a page long, so there's no evidence of 'strange' payments.

Considering that we have a (small) loan with the Co-op, have been with them for several years and have nothing on our credit cards (which they are quite happy for us to keep!), plus were accepted by Egg less than a month ago, I'm mystified. I'm also angry at the cavalier way in which we were informed of the refusal.

I note that derek99b says "Asda sent me a form to fill in that they would submit to Experian". They were a damn sight more helpful than our bank considering that derek was merely applying for a credit card, and that we've been loyal and trustworthy customers with the Co-op for years.

Oops, rant over. >:( (and breathe........ ;) )

ive heard that sometimes paying everything off and having no debts work against you as the companies dont see how they going to make any money out of people who clear their debt

sounds feasible why would they want to give u a card with thousands of pounds on it that theyre not going to make any money on?
