clunking noise from an electric shower

I have an electric shower running from the mains cold and it has begun making clicking, clunking noises randomly.
I've nothing running, no central heating, no washing mchines or dishwaters, no taps running anywhere ... the last shower of the same eventually began to leak as a result even with the power was off at the isolation pull cord switch. this shower is about 8 months old and used daily. the previous about the same before it gave up the ghost. not an overly hard water area
the pipework is buried in the wall, so it's a little tricky to add anything to it.
