Credit card letter - under age

Today my daughter has received one of those junk mail application letters from Mint credit cards. Problem is she's 12. I've no idea why they would send a 12 year old this, is there something I can do? Surely this is illegal?

I'm not sure there is anything you can do. I seem to remember a dog receiving a cc application, and an unborn child also.

Somehow your daughter's name has made it onto a junk mail list somewhere...once you're on it, its very hard to get off the list.

I'd apply for the card just to see what happens. All you do is tell the truth. IE correct date of birth, income would be whatever pocket money she gets, job would be full time education. Go on, it could be funny.

I do remember a programme on Sky about OAPs and ASBOs. An old man kept getting these letters for credit cards - he kept applying, even in his dogs name. I think he did well out of it...

Section 50 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 makes it an offence to send documents inviting minors to borrow money. There is however a defence for the company that they had no idea of the age of your daughter.

That said you could complain to your local Trading Standards so they can follow it up and you could inform Mint of the potential offence and that it could affect their ability to hold a Credit Licence (nice to turn the table every now and again)! Companies are getting desperate for names and addresses with people opting out via the MPS, I dread to think where they got your daughters details from.
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:

I get junk 'have one of our credit card' mail all the time.

I fill them in and, against occupation, I write 'undischarged bankrupt'. Strangely, I never get the cards (or any more junk mail from that firm).
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").
  • I actually applied for one of their credit cards and got turned down and in the same days post got another letter from the same company asking me to apply for the exact same credit card. ah the joys of owning a shredder.

Apply in kids name, max it out and refuse to pay (can't enforce a debt against a minor) IIRC.:rotfl: :rotfl:

A friend of mine while at Uni got so tired of being sent credit card applications from a company that he wrapped up a concrete block in brown paper, and then taped their pre paid envelope to the front of the block. He wrote on the side of the parcel that he did not wish to be contacted again and took it along to the post office. The weight was about 10kg and at todays prices, first class postage would be £35.32. He never heard from them again.
