  • I'm 32 and Mr Susiesue is 45. We bought our first house in 1999 when we were 23 & 36. Our mortage was around £40,000 and we took it over 25 years. When we moved in 2002, (aged 26 & 39), hubby realised that if we took out another 25 year mortgage, he'd still have to be working past 60. So, we took out a 20 year mortgage for £110,000 and were pleasantly surprised at the saving in the total amount of interest payable.

Looking back, I think that was the start of our lightbulb moment, although i think it took a few more years for it to reach full brightness!!!

After we'd lived in the house for a few months, we saw the BBC programme "how to pay off your mortage in 2 years". We both agreed that 2 years was totally unrealistic for us but it did get us thinking. Shortly after that, we discovered the joy of an offset mortage, MSE & stoozing. Since then, it's slowly becoming an obsession and the latest forecast is that we'll knock 10 years off the original end date of the mortgage.

Our other obsession is planning what we're going to do when we've done it!!!
