Has anyone any ideas about this?
I have tried scraper and hot air gun - slow & strenuous
dry scrape - even more strenuous but cheaper
I would like to try Nitromors or similar but would not like to risk damageing the marble.
Suggestions please.

I have one marble fireplace that was covered in paint. Scrapped the old paint dry using a spatula first and then cleaned the lot with Nitomors and a quick rub of white spirit. Job done not a mark on the marble.0
