4yr old going in for minor surgery but still worried

My ds2 has to have a circumcision on Monday. To do it they have to put him under general anaethetic. I know logically that this is a minor and short operation, but I am really worried about it.
Also I have had no information about how to care for the area. Ie can he just have a bath as usual.
Nor have I had any information about how much it is going to hurt. Ie will he be able to sit, or would that be too painful.
That sort of thing.
So if anyone has been through this and can share their experience I would be very grateful
thanks

I'm sorry I can't say I know but I can understand how worried you are so some hugs to get you through :grouphug: .
DD has just been in hospital for 5 days with glandular fever and an enlarged spleen so I know how hard it is when your little ones get sick.
Have you asked your GP? I would have a word with your surgery, maybe you have a practice nurse who could give advice?
Good luck and best wishes for your son.

thanks for the reply. I know it is only a minor operation, but I can't help worrying. It has to be done though, sigh

I'm sorry I don't know either. As you say, it's considered a minor operation so the risks are low. I assume the operation is definitely required? I would guess that it will hurt unfortunately but things will improve. I suggest searching google - there are several different ways of performing the op so maybe this will determine how you care for it afterwards. I think this operation is still routine for nearly every American boy (unless policy has changed more recently) so there should be plenty of info out there.
The question sometimes comes up on the menshealth.co.uk forums. I don't know if a young child could be given the same painkillers as an adult although if I remember correctly, it can be less traumatic for a young child overall.
Edited to say I didn't read the thread title properly.

My DS had this done when he was 3, it's 18 years ago now so my memory is a bit hazy and things may have changed. It really is quite a quick and simple op but it's only natural to worry, I think we were allowed to stay with him until he was asleep but I will admit that when we left the room I did have a good cry.

When he came round from the op he was a bit woozy and a little bit confused for a while but that wore off after he had a sleep. I can remember that the nurse put some cream on him after the op, I think it may have been a local anaesthetic and he stayed in hospital overnight afterwards but I'm not sure if they just do it as a day case now.
He was sore for a while afterwards and he complained that his underwear rubbed so we just stayed indoors for about a week and left him naked from the waist down. If I remember rightly we had to go back to the ward after a couple of days so they could just check everything was okay and the stitches just dissolved. I'm sorry but I really can't remember anything about bathing etc but they should tell you about the after-care at the hospital, if not, ask!

Both of mine were circumcised. 18 months and 6 months.Younger was certainly easier. Nappy on not aware of his tail and what had happened to it.
The older one was a little uncomfortable and fidgity. Once he came round and after dozing for a short while he was up and playing with the toys. The keep them in until they have their first wee.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Hi,
My son had this done when he was 3. He panicked when they brought him around from the anesthetic, as the first thing he saw was the bandage and blood, and the only thing that calmed him down was when they brought him some lego to play with. So take some familiar toys with you.
Once we were home, the nurse advised us to bathe it with salt water, I actually filled a small bowl and added salt to it and my son dipped himself in the water as it was sore to touch, it healed quite quickley after doing this.
I Hope it all goes well for you.
Cheers

when your child goes in for the op, the nurses should give you advice about all his after care what to give for pain relief etc. He will be a bit bruised after, it depends on the child on how much it bothers them. He can always pee in the bath if it is too sore (it sounds gross but much less traumatic for them!!)0
