Firefox Backup Guide

One of the big advantages of Firefox is the ability to restore your settings quickly if you have a problem. But looking at some of the Firefox threads a lot of people don't know how - thought I'd give a quick guide.

Experienced users will notice I've left lots out - trying to keep it simple for newbies.

Backup your profile


1. Empty your cache


Tools / Options / Privacy then Clear:

2. In windows, Click the Start, then Run and type:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You will see your profile folder there (called random-number.default):

3. Copy that folder and put it somewhere safe

thats it!

Use the Backup

1. Close Firefox

2. In windows, Click the Start, then Run and type

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

3. Replace the folder there with your backup folder

When you start Firefox, you should see everything as it was when you made the backup.

Note: Make sure the folder you're inserting has the exact same name as the folder you're replacing. If you're putting firefox on a new coumputer, or have completely deleted all Firefox folders from your system, the new Firefox will have given the profile folder a slightly different name. You will need to change the backup's name to match the new profile name
If in doubt, you could instead copy the contents of your backup profile into the profile folder
