Assuming the Passat is a PD diesel (100hp, 130hp+), then you better be sure to get the correct spec oil. These engines use a camshaft to pressurise the fuel in the unit-injectors, and it's the contact friction load between these items that requires the unique spec of oil. Variable servicing further confuses the issue. Ignore at your peril...
As someone suggested, do a search on the HonestJohn forums.
A bit of research shows oil with VW specs of;
VW 505.01=PD with fixed mile service,
VW 506.01=PD with variable mile service,
Both now seemily superceded by VW 507.00=PD all types.
Out of interest, Halfords sell this oil, which meets VW505.01 spec, 5ltr for £32. Quite often do offers on their own brand oils too.0 -
I just use the Ford stuff. More important is the AP/SAE spec than the name on the tin.0

Halfords have this and all other 5 litre own brand fully synthetic oils on Buy one get one free(".)0 -
If you drive your car very hard the 506.01 (0W-30) oil does not have the protection as it's too thin. It does not provided enough lubrication to a hot turbo and the turbo can go bang. This is speaking from experience!!
You do get extra fuel ecomony and the normal engine protection but I would never use the stuff again. The newer 507.xx is actually thicker 5W40 and you have to wounder why they have ditched the 0W30?
Switch to either fixed servicing (halfords PD oil is actually quite good but I don't know who makes it for them) or move to the thicker 507.xx stuff to keep variable servicing
Halfords are currently selling PD oil for BOGOFLets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:0
