Running gear anyone?

Hi I have recently got into running and now need some gear for the winter, mainly some long sleeved tops. I have found that they are actually quite expensive. Anyone know where I can get them cheaper???

  • www.wiggle.co.uk is a specialist cycle and running online shop. I've never bough any running kit off them, but they sell the cycling stuff at very good prices....

  • I can't advise you on top buying - I always buy mine in the sales but if you are just starting out running remember the following to prevent injury and unhappyness (I know from my own experience!!)
    • Get good pair of running trainers - don't skimp you will need to spend about £80 at least to protect your shins from splints and other injurys - get advice from a speciallist shop not high street stuff (run4it is great)
    • get bi-layered socks, asda dose some lovely cheep ones as does matalan - nike will charge you £6 a pair!! you need two layers to prevent blisters - vasaline is handy for reducing friction too
    • dont train too hard too soon - it's a hard excersise on the old skelliton and muscles be kind to yourself and you will enjoy runnning for longer!
    • invest in a great running bra - the ligaments are easily damaged and wont go back without surgery! www.lessbounce.com is my fave

Hope that is of help - I wish someone had told me this before I caused myself all kinds of injuries including shin splints and removing all the skin from one foot!

They do, link is to the top left of their home page. The £5 voucher can only be used on an order or £20 or £25 though (can't remember which). But great if you were going to spend that anyway!

Also make sure you get the right size of trainers, too small means you can lose toenails - speaking from experience!!!
2p off is still 2p off!

so true - did that once with a pair of DMs on a hillwalking weekend - nasty - had to wear blue nail varnish onthe other toes till the nail dropped off!!

but equally shoes that are too big (like the ones that removed my skin) are also a bad plan due to friction and your foot moving to and frow.

Seconded!!! I got some lycra bottoms that are brilliant for warmish running. I got a top for £3 which is almost identicle to my Lowe Alpine Dryflo (RRP £20/25) The fleeces are fantastic and in fact I would say that pretty much all their running gear is damn good stuff so keep an eye on their website and get there quick when it's on sale.

I also got a pair of Concurve Windstoppers from TOG 24 factory shop for under £20 (RRP about £70).

Pete Bland does some good clearance stuff for road running, he also sells Walshes if your interested in fell running.

Helly Hansen Lifas are still the popular choice for winter running as they wick, keep you warm and keep you cool. OK it's £20- £25 but you only need one and it will last you for years and years. (just don't forget to wash it, it's not called a smelly helly for nowt!!!). A helly hansen long sleeve will see you through serious weather, think -1 degrees on top of a mountain in driving sleet.... a helly and a waterproof is enough to keep you warm if you're moving so you'll be ok on a road.

Don't be tempted to buy mega expensive fashion trainers, Nike Shox will leave you with sore ankles/legs and you'll look an idiot. Get a solid soled pair of 'running' shoes without gel/air/springs. Make sure that they're big enough and lace them right up.

The double skin socks are great, 1000 mile socks are great if you can afford them and Sealskinz are great for wet weather. It's a lot of money to spend on your feet but it's worth it.

Don't forget a hat and gloves. Helly hansen do these too and they work. Keep a safety pin on your top so that you can attach your hat and gloves if you get too hot.

    :)
Just run, run and keep on running!
