Theres been a few suggestions about Wales, and I'll second them all!

We're about 15 miles north of Swansea and moved here from England 7 years ago.

Good schooling (our boy has been through years 1 - 6 here), lowish crime, high quality of life ~ of course employment isn't a highlight but there are jobs if you look.

Our 3-bed end of terrace is mid range at a smidge under £100k. Outside the cities you'd have trouble spending more than 200k on a 4 bed!
Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.
  • Having lived in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee (no!), Leeds, Halifax and Burgess Hill in Sussex, my firm favourites are Edinburgh (got everything, although house prices are very steep in the centre, but plenty of reasonable areas) and Burgess Hill (reasonable house prices for the SE, close to London and Brighton, good schools)
Currently live in Halifax (bit rough at night but fine) and am from Glasgow, so not really biased

I'd vote for either Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man, we spent 5 years living on the isle of man.

Low Tax, No Crime, Excellent Schools, House a good 3 bed semi about 200k.

Only issue on the isle of man is getting off and that can become a big issue. we moved back to rural england 4 years ago due to family commitments and our next move won't be in england....

Hi, we have found a property North Devon which we have fallen in love with, but would still consider Somerset. My biggest concern is trying to find a good 6th Form for my daughter in Sep 06. Is the school you mentioned King's Bruton? Thanks.

What about Durham? Lovely little city, good schools, excellent university, good rail links and only a short journey on the train to Newcastle. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and not too far from the coast. House prices are pretty good, obviously a bit higher if you're right in the city but if you're willing to live a mile or two out you can pick up a 4 bedroom detatched for about £150,000. Lots of nice little villages nearby with good, reasonable housing too.
LOL - I've just discovered this thread (a month late) and I'm glad somebody said Durham, as I grew up there.

Property prices have rocketed lately in the last few years in Durham [edit: but are still cheaper than most other parts of the UK] - my mum bought her 5 bed semi in 2000 for (I think) £65k, and if prices remain stable, she's expecting to sell in 2-3 years for about £160k and downsize. She lives in Belmont, which is a nice area a couple of miles outside Durham City. Going the same distance in other directions from the city are villages where you can still pick up a good sized house for roughly what Mum paid for hers 6 years ago.

Why don't you look at Scotland? Beautiful countryside, friendly people, great food, lot's of things to do (you not fancy mountain climbing? I love it!) You've got the Highlands, the Lowlands, it has everything anyone could want and best of all, the house prices are affordable. I moved to Scotland from England and I would never move back. You have the glamour and fun of places like Glasgow ( I love it! fantastic shopping and culture) to the beauty and tranquility of Dumfries & Galloway (where I bought my beautiful country cottage - with land! lot's of it! I even have my own apple trees and blackberry bushes :D ) I adore the Highlands and in my opinion Inverness is the best little city in the whole of the UK. The Isle of Skye has it's own special magic and if you want real rural splendour nip over on the ferry to the Orkneys. Fort William is beautiful (Ben Nevis magical) and Ullapool is a quaint little town nestled in the Highlands which is so cute. If you can't find your magical place with the nicest scenery, the cutest property at the best price somewhere in the great country of Scotland I'll eat my hat :D:D:D

By the way, haggis, tatties and neeps is yummy! :j
