Planning for Garage Conversion

I am thinking of buying a house which may come up on market in a while. Its a 3 bed semi in north london with attached garage.

The house is a semi with the left side attached. On the right side it has a garage attached then the next door neighbour property which has driveway on side (sie of another garage) and then side enterance to house (converted into 2 flats).

I would like to build a room on top of the garage and convert the actual garage into another room. I'm just wondering if we would have any problems with planning etc. The house is in North London and I know area well lived there for 20 years.

Why don't you ask the Council planners? They will have a link on their website for queries such as this (something like "Do I need Planning Permission") and a phone number. Generally speaking, they will allow anything that is behind the building line, doesn't upset the neighbours, doesn't look awful and doesn't overdevelop the site, unless the property is listed or in a conservation area.
