I have a computer running Win98SE and when on the CD & DVD draws keep opening and shutting even though I hav'nt requested it.
Can anyone please suggest how I might resolve the problem?

If it continuously cycles open and closed while the power is on then the sensor that detects when the draw is fully closed may have failed.
If that's correct then it almost certainly isn't worth repairing, just replace it.0 -

Thank you for your reply.
I presume you mean the CD & DVD writers and not the whole computer?0 -
Hi aardvark,
"CD & DVD draws keep opening and shutting even though I hav'nt requested it." This is also a classic sign of a possible virus/malware infection.
Scan your computer for infections using a good anti-virus/malware program.Computer geek/junkie in waiting...:rolleyes:0 -

I have only just reformatted it - is this possible?0 -
It is if you have been using the Internet. If you haven't been on the Internet as yet, then I would go with what fwor suggusted in that there may be a possible sensor malfunction.
Also Win98 is no longer supported by Microsoft and the drivers for the CD/DVD drives may be incorrect or not upto date and be causing conflicts within the operating system.Computer geek/junkie in waiting...:rolleyes:0
