Hi Folks,
Having to vent as I cannot quite believe the quote we got last night.. We live in a 4-bed detached, but I would not say its huge by any estimation. And yes there are certain windows that need to be specially rigged for safety legislation that was not in existence when the property was built in the 80s. We have had a few quotes for all the Windows and doors, and they range from 8k - 10k depending on how many openings, style of catches etc. Now we come to the good part - we wanted a quote from Everest as they are known to have the best product and service. Well in the man came and delivered the piece of paper with the good news that - "its the second figure, so you wont have a heart attack".. Ok there was no heart attack but I am still feelin dizzy. The initial figure was £42k but god be praised they had an offer on that gave us 50% off, which reduced i to £21k. This was a shock and needless to say, we will not be going with them..
I wonder if they are that much out of touch with their competition or are they convinced that their product is that much better than he rest?! At least !!!!!! Turpin wore a mask!!!
Rant over - Thank you... And Caveat emptor- Let the Buyer beware...

I would think perhaps the only reason they put £42k on the quote is to give them an excuse to give you a discount. It's like when supermarkets say 'Was £29.99, now £12.99 or something' to make you think you're getting a bargain, when you're not.
Obviously £21k is still bloomin expense - perhaps they hope potential customers will be swung over by the thought of getting a discount?
If I were you, I would go for a local firm anyway, rather than one of these big ones. For example, there is South Coast Windows (or something like that) who always advertise discounts and sales on the front of our local paper - if they can afford all that advertising, then they are obviously charging too much!Watch this space...0 -

That's unfortunate, as I know a brilliant firm but its Staffordshire based. Im sure someone will be able to recommend you a small local firm though.0 -
Have you tried posting for recommendations about good local window companies in Essex on the Local MoneySaving board?
(I did one the other day for electricians near me.)0 -
Thank you all fo your comments. And good suggestion, will try a post and see if anyone know a good, reliable and realistic local firm.
Thanks again,

Having worked within the trade for nearly 30 years, it always makes me chuckle when I see this. This is an excellent example of the power of advertising over substance.
Within the trade, all we know Everest for are their marketing exaggerations, and astronomic pricing structure (even after they have offered their so called discounts).
After being paid to put right a few of their jobs over the years, I also don't regard their service/quality very highly. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I used Everest after the same gimmick. Worst still they promised not just the dicount but a 10% cash back. Now they dont wabt to give me the cash back and I really do not see anything special about the job they did.
They failed to put vents and I had mega problems with condesation and spent about 4k to redecorate the house recently as we had to remove all the mouldy paper linings on the walls.
No way!0
