Hi Horace: Apart from the obvious, how can you tell if it's a troll posting?
Don't think I'd be able to suss it?
It looked genuine until another person - mountainchrisriver noticed that the perpetrator had posted similar threads in the past all of which were fictional and phishing for ideas to make complaints about various companies. I hates trolls.0 -
and again.........0 -
Its slipped again....so BUMP.0

Hi everybody.
Over the last few weeks we have had a number of "troll" attacks on the boards.
What is a Troll? A troll is a person that posts deliberately provocative, nasty or hurtful comments on threads. They may be a person with no previous connection to the board or someone that has created a pseudonym to get their point made.
If you should get a comment made on any thread you post asking for help and advice please realise this comment is not directed at you personally.
We really are all a lovely bunch here (oops, modest, sorry) so please ignore these nasty comments and continue to post here as normal.
what should i do if i get a comment made on my thread?
firstly do not respond to the comment as this invariably is what the person wants. At the bottom of the post, on the left hand side is a red "warning" triangle. Click this and then "send" the message that comes up. This will report the message to abuse who will review it's content and delete it.
The person we had this morning was particularly vile and nasty and please believe me is an extreme rarity here.
Above all PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE BOARDS. THIS SITE IS AN ASSET TO SO MANY, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT FEELS THE WORLD IS FALLING IN ON YOU. THERE IS SUCH A WEALTH OF ADVICE HERE TO BE HAD THAT THE COMMENTS OF ONE MUST NOT DETER YOU FROM AVAILING YOURSELF OF THE KNOWLEDGE HERE!!!!
It is testament to the work that martin has done and continues to do that so many people give their time knowledge and experience freely to others, without judgement, to lift people out of the depths of debt crisis
PLEASE DO NOT LET THE ACTIONS OF THE MINORITY RUIN THAT.
Kind wishes
P

Aaaaah, so the OP may well be the troll themselves!

In the above case it was, and there have been several "get rich quick" threads started on that section even since I arrived - the only person hoping to get rich being the OP.
Fwiw ...
I mentioned earlier I am experienced on other forums - and one of the ways of reducing such things is to limit the "privileges" of new members - eg., not allowing PM's until maybe 20/30/50 posts.
Never sure if placing limits is always a good idea - but real newbs rarely send PM's to start, and it may be one way of monitoring things. If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

the little !!!!!!!
I think limiting services available for a probationary period is an excellent idea!

vBulletin the software platform this forum uses will have such facilities - some of the forums I am referring to had just those forms of limitations eg: when you could get an ava, when you could post photos etc. As I say I am not 100% convinced - but they do create a feeling of value beyond post count - and it would help all those on this thread - and the forum more widely - who can spot trolls or adverts etc - but cannot see PM's - which in many ways can be very much worse.
Let you and others here, ponder on that and if it makes any sense - where's the suggestion box around here?If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

Hi,
As I'm a newbie I agree with what you are saying re pm ing I don't think I would need to send a pm for quite a while.
