Can i claim childcare cost with tax credit and Nursery Education Grant?

Hi,

I am just wondering if we can claim childcare cost when sending our tax credit application. Our daughter is 3 years old and the nursery costs about £1000. We get a Nursery Education Grant trough the nursery and end up paying only £550 per semester (about 12 weeks). It’s roughly £45 per week.

Thank you

Nick

To get childcare costs via tax credits, you have to be working at least 16 hours per week (both working at least 16 hours if you are a 2 parent family).

Hoiw much you will get depends on your income, childcare costs etc.

I would say claim it anyway, even if you think you may earn too much, as the worst you will get is a 'no'.

Entitled.to site will give you an idea if you can claim, you'll only be able to claim for the costs after the grant though. Its capped quite low on joint incomes so the site will give you an idea if you can claim or not.

Entitledto has been giving some weird and wonderful figures of late though, going on some posts on here.

I don't know if it is just certain benefits it is getting wrong or not, but best to double check before relying on it, just in case.

Don't know if the tax credit calculator is more reliable or not, for childcare? http://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/Qualify/DIQHousehold.aspx

You need to tell TC how much YOU are actually paying towards the CC. To give the correct figure you need to calc the total cost you will pay for the next 12 months / 52, as you will be paid a % of your average weekly costs. Call TC helpline if you want an accurate calculation & to know if you qualify.
