Fitness First Subscription - HELP!

OK so I was a member of Fitness First for a year and barely used, and having just taken on a mortgage on my own and moved out the area, decided to cancel my subscription.

I rang the branch (in March) to find out how to go about this, and he advised me to write to the manager (since I am out of the area), advising them I was cancelling and to stop my direct debit after the next payment went out. I wrote to them, as he said, I clearly stated I would let the 1st April payment go out, and he said it had to, and then cancelled the direct debit as I was advised.

I look at my other account today (my current account, seperate to direct debits) and they ahve taken a months membership off me!

I rang and they are saying that they advise people to send by recorded delivery (which they never told me). I do know in hindsight I should have done this, but I didn't so...

I am seeing the manager tomorrow... any tips? I could really do with getting this month's money back
