Has anyone heard of this? Its an online free game or you can pay to become a member and get more ummmmmm stuff.
My son wants to become a member but I am loath to give them my credit or debit card details because of any problems that might be incurred (I've been reading the advice somewhere on here that says don't let people automatically deduct from your card).
However this is the only option they give for payment in the UK.
Any advice please? Has anyone heard if this is a reputable company? All his friend's parents already seem to have paid for membership which isn't exactly helping

Not exactly on the subject of Runescape, but a suggestion.
If he likes playing these kind of role playing games. Have you looked at Guild Wars ? You can buy the disc in the shops or online (Play.com £17.99). The game is played online, but once you've bought the disc you don't have to pay to access the online game. This is very handy, no monthly subscription or credit card details needed. This game is massively popular, our boy is currently wandering through different worlds for hours every day.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Hi Rex
Yes we have heard of Guild Wars. Unfortunately despite our suggestion all of his friends insist on playing Runescape and have now apparently all signed up so he wants to join them.
Seems daft to me as I think Guild Wars is far superior and not just on the credit card sign up! I think he did actually buy one but only one of his friends did so could join him and the others stuck to Runescape so they've gone back to that

Hi Both my boys play Runescape and subscribe. We have'nt had any problems with the DD and get an email to confirm payment has been taken each month. In August we cancelled since we were away for 3 weeks and then set it back up when we returned. If you don't want it to be taken automatically, you could subscribe for a month, cancel the next day/week and then when your credit (28days later I believe) runs out subscribe again. That way they would only take out the one payment until you rejoin, so you could control when payment is taken. Does that make sense? Hope it helps.Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves0

Thanks Joto
Do you subscribe by bank account DD? I wouldn't mind that as I can cancel at my end. However when I checked the subscription options I couldn't find one for bank DD only card subscription.
The info about cancellation was what I wanted
I only know people who had subscribed I wasn't sure what they were like on cancellation. I had heard (on another board on here) that if you subscribe via credit/debit card you can't cancel it at your end with the bank/credit card co. only tell the company to cancel it and if you didn't you would be in difficulty particularly if its not a UK company which is why I was wary.
He's been on at me for about 2 months now to do this and I keep putting it off. Unfortunately his last friend's mother subscribed last week so my name is currently mud

Hi We use a credit card and have cancelled it with no problem. I do keep checking that my children are using it and as soon as I think they have lost interest I'm going to cancel it without telling them and see how long it takes them to notice. I did think it would be a quick member thing and they would get bored but so far they still play. I don't know much about the game but I know when they go online they can chat to their friends. I must admit I held out for as long as I could, mainly because I don't like them on the computer all day. But they both pay with their pocket money so I guess it's up to them to a certain point. If your concerned you can send them a cheque but obviously your son will have to wait until it's cleared before he's registered.Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves0

Thanks

He's paying out of his pocket money as well and no way will he be on it all day as his computer has 'lost' it internet connection software so he's relying on me not using mine

World of Warcraft is the biggie at the moment, but requires a monthly subscription.
Guild Wars is a one off payment, but is a "poorer" game. they plan on releasing expansion packs (at a cost) which will enable you more to explore and more things to do.
So try Guild Wars and hope his interest wanes, because they can be an expensive and time consuming hobby."See you on the Other Side"0 -
Hi, my 11yr old daugher and her 2 cousins all play Runescape - but they don't pay anything. They can meet up and play online and she has made friends from all round the globe. She seems to have lots of fun anyway - don't know what extra 'ummmmmmmm stuff' you get when you do pay!
We've decided that there's so much free stuff online - not to mention all the PC games we've got, that we won't get into the pay for online games thing. So far she seems to have accepted it (grudgingly!). She's limited to 1 hour Runescape at a time..... I have to prise her fingers off the keyboard.....!
Once you start paying, it's a slippery slope....Money can't buy you happiness, but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery.

I'll have to ask him again. I know he has 'finished' it as a freebee but you can get more when you pay - more missions?? more 'awards' (hats and wands and things or something aren't they??) or something like that

Don't ask me - I'm sticking to my Sims

I don't think I have a leg to stand on here if he is paying out of his pocket money especially as my sims update was pre-ordered and is on its way
