Hi sassy, you will need a couple of tubes of decorators caulk. You can get this from all DIY stores for about £1.50ish. Most of the time its in white but i think they do other colours. If you can't find a colour you want, paint the walls and fit the skirting, then use some clear silicone (you cant paint over this, thats why you paint and fit the skirting 1st).

i dont think clear silicone can be painted over, what i tend to do is look for the spots on the wall that are most out of plumb, where you think you will have the biggest gaps and put a large blob on there before i fix skirting, this wil fill the worst of the gaps, then i run a bead of decorators filler, use stuff in a tube and a mastic gun ,it gives a better finish along the top of the skirting to give a good seal and finish0

I said clear silicone because the skirting isn't going to be painted.0

ive bought some wax to do the skirting, do you know if i need to use knotting on the wood before.
also does wax go over filler ok0 -
Decorators filler, try Wickes or Screwfix, nice and easy to use and is flexible so won't crack.0

Never done it myself but I know people who use the sawdust from cutting the skirting mixed with a little PVA to make a filler that exactly matches the colour of the skirting.0
