well i do sort of want to be able to look at the bed before i buy. that was the main reason to not buy online. i also didnt want loads of unheard of online stores being recomended. i havent bought furniture for a long time so dont have a clue which shops are reliable. if argos are reliable on delivery i might check them out.

I'm afraid that to get a real bargain you will have to buy on line. This is because overheads are huge for bed stores. It's not like a supermarket where they can fit thousands of different items into a shop, then have long queues at the checkouts. So they often have around a 400% mark up on the prices (i've seen over 500%).

As for trying out the beds in the shops, this can only give you a very rough idea. You need to sleep on a bed for a few nights to find out if a bed is suitable.

I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds and mattresses from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:

    1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

    2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller. Also read all their negative or neutral feedback.

    3) make sure they have recent feedback (unused accounts with good feedback are sometimes hacked).

    4) make sure most of their feedback is for selling, and that it is for similar items to those you want to purchase

    5) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the right choice because it will cost them if you return it).

    6) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.

    7) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).

Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.

Oh I nearly forgot, who told you that Ikea beds are well made Nuttywoman??

i dont trust ebay and i dont want a second hand bed either. as far as type fo matress goes i am not fussy. to me a bed is a bed. my current bed has been clapped out for years and i manage to sleep fine in it. it is so clapped out that all the legs have gone and it is sat on blocks of wood. argos is looking the best bet at the moment. i can get a decent enough bed from there for less than £200 by the looks of it. unbelievably it is easier to find a good choice in their catalogue than on their site. it is usually the other way round.

What is the difference between buying on line and buying from Argos (you still can't try them out). Also you won't get a decent bed for £200 from Argos, many people think they are cheap, but the truth is that unless they are clearance items they aren't cheap at all. A £200 bed with Argos would be a cheap quality one.

Also you say you don't trust ebay, well it isn't ebay that you buy from it's the seller. As long as you follow the guidelines I posted then you will be quite safe buying from ebay.

The first one is a budget bed, and is probably around £50 more than you could get a similar bed on line. Take a look at how flat the top of the mattress is compared to the mattress in the second link. This is because it has very little quilting, so you would probably be able to feel the springs.

The second link is a bit misleading. The description says: 'Layezee Beds Pure Micro Quilt Single Divan - 2 Drawers', but it isn't a micro quilted mattress in the picture, it is hand tufted. So as they aren't even showing the bed in question, I can't really advise on it.

they do give four different choices of mattress but which to choose is beyond me. on one hand i want to get the best one for the money and on the other hand i dont want to buy the most expensive if the one below that is perfectly good enough and not much worse.

well i went for this one.

    http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001001&langId=-1&searchTerms=6651305&Submit=GO+%3E

they are coming next week which is pretty good if they stick to it. after it has arrived and i have had a nights sleep in it i will give a review here of the bed and the service from argos just incase it maybe of use to someone who has visited this thread.

lol. thanks for your efforts. i was never going to trust some dodgy seller on ebay. looking at the feedback isnt reliable coz there are ways to fiddle it.
