have to say i would go for the mazda having a 1998 626 2liter petrol for the last 6 years with very little trouble - plenty of room, lovely to drive and not to hard on the juice if i drive properly! having always at least 2 cars on the go at any one time i have also had a ford fiesta and at least 3 escorts in the last few years and have driven a focus belonging to a friend i would still take the mazda
while i knit i think

I would probably have a look for a diesel focus. They are superb cars, and get good economy. All the focus cars have had good reviews, 2002 will probably be a MK1.5 focus which has some better cosmetic finishes over the MK1.
The only downside is that as far as I remember the focus never had a 2.0 Diesel engine, the biggest was a 1.8. If you do go for a petrol focus, get the 1.6, the 1.8 is not worth the extra, the difference between the two is pretty small.
