Hello,
I recently bought a M reg Ford Mondeo which had one key with the red chip.
All i want is a replacement that i can have as a spare. However I rang a ford garage and they said this would cost me £175. Alot of money seeing the Car is only worth a bit more than that.
1) Does any one know a cheap way I can get a spare key?
2) Can I get a key cut without a chip and use it instead?
Thansk alot

Hi
It is so expensive to get a new key from a dealer, I must agree.
You can buy one off ebay and cut it at your local locksmith using your old one.
Does your car have an immobiliser? How many bottons are their on your key fob? I think, but not quite sure, yours will be a two bottons key.
If your car has an immobiliser, I think you need TWO programmed keys before you can programm the third one. That's why the dealers charge a bomb to do one for you if you want another key with remote bottons.
There is one on ebay selling the remote transponder bit for your car, Clicky
You can use the following instruction to programm it to your car. It will open the car and lock it, but it won't be programmed to start the engine.
1. Put key into ignition.
2. Turn it to position I.
3. Wait about 10 seconds until the LED on the clock is lit constantly. The programming mode is now activated.
4. Turn the key back to 0 and remove it from the ignition.
5. Aim the remote towards the receiver (black cover on interior light).
6. Press AND hold the lock button.
7. When the LED on the remote lights up press the unlock button four times while still holding down the lock button. On the fourth time release both buttons.
8. Keep the remote aimed at the receiver while both LEDs (on the remote and on the clock) flash four times. The remote is now programmed.
--- repeat steps 5-8 for additional remotes---
9. To exit programming mode turn on the ignition
Then to programm it to start the car ( Most of these Ford cars, the car will not start if the ECU doesn't get on with the transponder on the key fob) You may be able to use the central locking feature, but, you will need two programmed keys to programm a third one.
There is a cheaper way of getting a second key, from a dealer. It roughly costs £85, it is still expensive, but, cheaper than the qouted £175!! They key they can get you is a basic one without a remote control, but coded to start the car ( ECU will be de javo with it!). Having this key will allow you to programm more keys with a remote control to start the car following the instructions below:
1. Insert the first programmed key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the lock cylinder from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for one second).
2.Turn ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the first key from the ignition lock cylinder.
3. Within five seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position, insert the second programmed ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition lock from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain the ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for one second).
4. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the second key from the lock cylinder.
5. Within ten seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position, insert the unprogrammed ignition key (new key) into the lock cylinder and turn the lock cylinder from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain the ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for less than 5 seconds).
6. Check the new programmed key starts the engine. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position for five seconds then try to start vehicle with the new programmed key.
Again, if you decide to buy the one off ebay, you will need to buy a blade to be cut similar to your current one. You will be able to programm the fob to do the central locking function without a second key, but, not starting the engine.
All in all, the cost of getting the £85 key of the dealer to be able to programm a third key is a bit over the top considering the age and value of the car. So, in my opinion, I woiuld recommend the normal ( No bottons) coded key from the dealer for £85 as your best bet.
Give your local locksmith a visit and see what they offer. Also, it might worth having a look here http://www.fordmondeo.org/
Good luck and kepp us updated how you get on.Be nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
Thanks for the reply.
The key i have has no buttons, it is just a normal ford key with a red chip.
I don't know if my car has a immobiliser, i assume so as it has the red light that flashes.

Hi Dan
I am sorry. I have posted half the post by mistake and when I finished it, you have repied to it.
Anyway, check with dealer if the qouted £175 one is with remote central locking bottons, or a standard no thril one as the latter should be around £85. Don't forget to ring several local dealers as prices may vary.

Local key cutting place does these for around £35 including the programming.0

I bought a Mondeo a while ago, and as far as I can see, the transponder chip in the key comes ready-programmed with an identity. As you say, such a key, supplied new and cut is about £35. There are references around that suggest it's possible to buy one of the chip keys on eBay for about £9-15 and get them cut for another £3. I decided not to bother with a key blank from non-Ford source.
However, without two keys that are already recognised by the immobiliser system, it's not possible to program it to recognise further keys, and instead requires a diagnostic connection, pushing the total cost upto around £100-150.
This is why I had a spare third key cut shortly after I bought my Mondeo, and added it myself to the immobiliser. I keep it in a safe place, should I need it to add a replacement key at some point in the future.0
