fiat punto - whirring/whinning around the wheel?

Our punto's just a year out of warranty and 1 month after a service, but suddenly there's a whirring/whinning sound coming from a front wheel.
It isn't all the time, and sometimes breaking stops it (not always).
Any idea what it might be? I'd like at least a little info before i go into the garage looking stupid and get a 'fix it' price to match!

Does sound like a wheel bearing - but really need to get someone to look at it - its very hard to diagnose over the phone/internet. Hopefully you have a good garage near you.Genie
