funding from a research council towards a postgrad - income for tax credit purposes?

is any funding I might recieve from a research council towards a postgraduate degree classed as income by the tax credits?

From experience, i know this funding can be up to about £15K and is tax free.
So i can not imagine there is any way that it would not be counted as income.0 -
i have no experience of tax credits, but it isn't counted as taxable income by inland revenue (so you get your tax free allowance on top). might be worth asking student services as they'll have been through it before with someone.:happyhear0

No, tax-free student grants would not affect tax credit claims. I have in front of me the instructions from a Tax Credits renewal pack. On page 30 of this booklet, under the heading "other income", it says:
"Do not include the following...
student loans;
other student grants (with the exception of the Adult Dependant's Grant)"
So a grant for post-graduate study would only be relevant if it included sums to support an adult dependant on you.0 -
