Leaded Effect Windows

I have leaded effect windows on all the windows in my home. My bf has decided he doesn't like them and wants to remove the windows as we cant afford to replace all the windows at the time being.
Someone has told us that we can remove them and then use nail varnish to remove the glue. Was wondering if anyone has tried this and whether this works. Or has anyone heard of anyother way of removing the lead strips?
Thanks in advance!

The first thing to do is get a stanley blade and gently lift a
corner of the lead and then peel back, if they are double glazed the
lead could be tucked under the gasket so you might go so far then it will
break off just by the gasket, Thinners will shift the glue in seconds.0
