With regard to earthing the case although there is no mains potential present there will be stray capacitance and RFI (Radio Frequency Interference), if you don’t take precaution to suppress the RFI you will interfere with other equipment near by and if the case charges up which it will if not at ground potential, you will get twa*ed off the case when you touch it.
