malicious damage and No claim bonus

Hi,

someone smashed two windows from my car which my insurance replaced. as I'm trying to renew my policy they informed me that my no claim bonus is gone, even though this was obviously not my fault.

Is this true?

Thanks

  • It doesnt matter if it was your fault or not. You claimed on your insurance therefore you now have no bonus for not having claimed - because you claimed!

Sometimes its worth seeing if it will be cheaper to repair any faults yourself rather than claim on insurance due to the loss of NCB.

As wrong as it may seem its correct. Its a no claims bonus, not a no fault bonus. You have made a claim so have lost your NCB. Had there been a 3rd party to claim from I *think* your NCB would have been re-instated after the claim was paid out as it wasn't your fault.

Was it only glass replacement or was any other damage sustained? Usually glass replcement alone will not affect your NCD. It would help if you could tell us which insurer is involved so we can check the actual policy wording.

with this are are right, BUT, if someone phones up to make a claim for vandalism and only claims for the glass, they will be charged their accidental damage excess and ncd effected. this is as they are making a vandalism claim and did not specify they want to make a glass only claim. its a bit of a stitch up but it happens more often than a lot of people realise.

Yeah I know, a relative recently put in a claim for 4 windows being smashed. First the insurer stated this was subject to AD excess (£300). Then when they argued that the claim should be payable under the glass section the insurer tried to argue that the excess payable was 4 times the £50 glass excess i.e. £200.

It was only after they asked me for advice that they managed to point out to the insurer that the glass section stated it covered damage to glass by any cause and that the excess was payable per claim, not per piece of glass.

The level of expertise of some frontline claims staff is shocking.

if they get away with it and bring in the extra cash, Im sure their companies are happy. I spoke to a customer about a year ago and they had their car stolen from a shopping centre car park it was found with damage to the front wing and a window smashed to get in. Her insurer at the time told her she would have to pay her glass xs for the window, the accidental damage xs for the wing damage and then her fire and theft xs as it was stolen. After several phone calls they backed done and agreed it was theft and so that xs applied only. Needless to say she changed insurer at renewal
