Voice Router issues

Me again....

OK at my Dads house I wanted to install the Linksys Voice Gateway Router SPA3102
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3473

At his house I have setup a Tiscali Broadband connection but it uses a USB modem, but I get the impression from the instructions that it need to be a Ethernet modem. What is the best way of getting this VOIP system up and running - and saving him a packet!
Help me to help you :santa2:

Yeah, these expect you to have an Ethernet modem and not the el-cheap (crappy) USB jobs that many ISPs give away.

On cable broadband their modems are Ethernet based, so is an easy set-up with that.

Due to USB modem being el-cheapo it's these that are mostly in the UK, with only a couple of Ethernet based ADSL modems on-sale the last time I looked in the UK.

However this device can be used like some of the other models, by way of a router.

Instead of connecting this device to the Ethernet modem and then your PC to the other port on this device you buy a ADSL Modem/Router. You then connect your PC to one port on the router and then connect the SPA to another port on the router.

As you say this is for Tiscali which is ADSL and not cable, you need to make sure you get a ADSL Modem/Router and not a cable router (which doesn't have the ADSL or cable modem built-in).

You might find wireless routers are cheaper than just wired routers, wireless routers also come with at least 4 hard-wired ports.

Once you have a router, you should un-install all the USB modem nonsense. eMail, web browser etc don't need to 'dial-in' the internet is just there as the modem/router handles that - once set with the right log-in details etc.

Broadbandbuyer, Broadbandstuff, eBuyer, Amazon and other retails will have something that should do the job.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
