activation code for windows xp

okay, is there anyway around getting an activation code?

just been given a laptop and it's been reformatted and has xp, i have a 30 day activation window, so i'm hoping to either get one from the person i got the laptop from or see if any of you clever lot can help me?

You just need to enter the license key from the XP disc that was used to install it..

Unless it's a pirated copy, in which you won't get help here as it's against the rules of the site and of course, the law..

it won't be pirated, was a friends husbands for business but he's just upgraded his machine and as she has one, she offered this as a gift as she knows my OH is looking to do some courses this year

windows xp needs a license key on install so that has been entered, (u need a license to use it legally) that will probably be on a sticker underneath that says windows xp,
After that here are 2 ways for it to be activated one is pressing a button whilst connected to internet.
The other is via phone which is veeeerryy tedious but not too tricky.
Next time the message pops up click on it it should then give u the option to activate via either method

thanks mdbarber i'll see if i can get it from my friend and if not i'll have to set up the web on it, think i can remember what i did to get my BB up on this pc

go to activation window and a code will be there for you to ring up and activate - you have to type in all the numbers in blocks but you get the code at the end and it will be sorted for you. i had to phone up andactivate mine several times after hardware failures and the lke and then even had to speak to the operators. sometimes the windows code will be on a sticker on the side of the pc then you just type that in

In a command prompt window type the following to get a further 30 days, from Microsoft site, search "rearm"

slmgr -rearm

Are you suggesting that th OP use a stolen product key? What happens when the person buys the PC that the product key was erroneously used. M$ will deactivate one or both of the installs. You wouldn't steal the computer, why steal the software?

Either get the original product key, or contact M$ and ask for a kit to get legal, costs around £95 for XP and you get a new CD and your very own legitimate product key sticker.

You've been watching too many of those "You wouldn't steal a handbag...." things on DVDs

Those things get on my baps. Knock-off DVDs don't have them.
