Digi Box

Please can someone advise? My mum bought herself a digi-box and a new tv. The digi box won't work. I know nothing about them and am hopefully going round tomorrow to see if I can get it going. Someone told her that it needs to be coded for her area? Is that right? So, you can't just buy one off the shelf and plug it in?

Thanks for any advice.

you can buy them off the shelf and they will work if you are in the reception area, should auto tune in (or you need to add channels manually)

check here by entering the postcode (it tells me I won't get it but i do with an aerial amplifier...lol)

if it says you should then it may be a case of getting a better aerial, there are specific Digital aerials around now, medium gain for a good reception ares about £20 from B+q, High gain for a poor reception area about £45-60

Don't forget to attach the aerial to the Digi Box before you turn it on. :)

Donnie, do you mean the existing analogue ariel or the new one (if I have to get one)?

You shouldn't need a new aeiral if you live in a freeview area. I was told wen I got it that it wasn't avilable in my area, but I got it with an indoor aeiral (although it needed adjusting to a different position for channel 4!). Once wired to the roof aerial I haven't had any problems. What does the postcode checker say?

Postcode checker says yes, it is available, but we 'may' need an ariel. Do you think it's worth trying with an indoor ariel? If that doesn't work and I have to buy one, (sorry for being dull) does the new ariel have to be fixed to the roof or can it just hang out the window. god I must sound so thick

what aerial does your mother have at the moment ?? a roof one or a Tv-top one ??

mines in the loft but for best reception( or if it does not work properly) it should be outside

I found that without an booster amp it would only find about half the channels, does your mum get any channels ??

what make of digi box is it ??

I think donnie means that the existing aerial to the Tv goes into the Dig box, then out to the TV via either another Co-ax lead or a scart lead

It's a Bush model with a new separate tv as well. When she set it up, it started to work and then said 'technical error'.

if you go into the set-up menu of the box it should have a signal strength bit....

often shows green/amber/red.. red being bad or a percentage

    what does it show ?

Thanks Browntoa but I'm not at my mums right now, but I will make a note of that and have a look tomorrow when I go over. Thanks for all you help.
