no garage door keys?

We just completed on our house today (yay!) but went round and they have left the garage door unlocked but no key in sight and for the back door the key is BROKEN... it it just a pole with the actual key bit broken off and it is stuck locked... What can we do about this? I expected the garage door to be lockable but it's not so no good for our insurance....

Is this something we should have checked about before we completed? We were told everything was in good working order...

TBH, I'd be replacing all the locks anyhow. Who knows how many keys are about?

Yeah I will but we didn't want to have to do it RIGHT NOW, especially as we want to replace the garage door which is gonna be expensive :(

Calling a locksmith tomorrow. Can I just go and give them the current keys, ask them to replace locks and choose what with, let them go over there of their own accord and go and get the new keys once it's done? (not moving in for like 4 wks)

Garage doors can usually be locked from the inside
How do you get out having done that?(assuming stand alone garage with no side door)

B&Q will sell you a hasp and padlock for a fiver. Or you could spend hours of time and hundreds of pounds trying to sue the people you bought the house off of.

Five minutes with a screwdriver and a cordless drill will silence your whining.

In the time the OP spent asking if he could blame someone else, he could have fixed the problem.

You really do have to wonder.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

I do NOT do DIY. I can't see how I could padlock this door.. it's a l shaped handle and then the lock... Also, I would lock from inside via side door but they have left us that broken key I mentioned.

    Locksmith going in soon.

I am not going to 'sue'

    (PS What's a hasp?)

    I don't own a cordless drill, what's a good/reliable brand?

(PPS I am female, not that that makes any difference, just don't want to be called 'he')

Yeah, I don't do DIY. If I tried I'd spend hours trying to buy the bits, get home, have the wrong bits, go back and swap for something else, come back, not be able to undo the old one, faff about for ages, cry, cry again, have another go, c0ck it up, try to put the old one back on, cry, cry again, try to find somebody that could do things, cry, get chocolate and wait for them to come and do their craft.

Much easier to start by buying chocolate and finding somebody that knows what they're doing.

You might be able to get a replacement key for the garage lock - see if there's a brand or any numbers on it anywhere. Otherwise you'll have to replace - not so bad we did when we moved here - pretty straightforward bit of DIY. In the mean time could you park the car in front of the door to make it impossible to open?

surely you'd replace the locks immediately anyway - it takes about 10 minutes just make sure you get a square/diamond spindle as appropriate.
