British Gas Price Guarantee 2009

As my British Gas last price guarantee comes to an end this month I have been offered to take out a price guarantee until 2009 with rates 9.8% above their current standard variable rates. There will also be a cancellation fee of £55 for gas and £20 for electricity. I am not sure whether this is a good deal or not and would be very interested if anyone with some knowledge has looked into this.

Thanks

all depends what region you are in as prices vary region by region.

post your supply region and the new (unit) rates you are being offered by BG and I'm sure people wil have some ideas.

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

What is the name of your current tariff?

BG gas prices are the same across UK but their electricity prices vary.

Is it 9.8% for gas and 9.8% for electricity you are being offered?

BG standard prices are considerably higher than their Click Energy(internet) tariff. So the premium over their cheapest tariff is a lot more than 9.8%.

Nobody can tell you if it is a good deal or not, as it is simply a gamble. Personally for a deal finishing next year(2009) I wouldn't take the gamble, but I would look at the deals on offer to 2011 with other companies.

I to got a letter saying about this aswell yesterday. Firstly i think it is naff to have to opt out (you have to send the slip back or you will be put on 2009 protection) then they are pushing up the price by 9.8% for the privilage of you going onto this. HMMMM i dont think so!. Anyway i got my mad head on and phoned them this morning. Spoke to a nice chap called mike who by the way has heard of martins site hehehehe:T . I asked him straight to cut the bull and tell me what i the tier prices for the 2009 protection were, well in my region of gloucester he says

    Gas Electric

    1st tier 6.754 1st tier 24.756
    2nd tier 2.833 2nd tier 10.895

So then i said blimey the leccy is loads im only paying 14.995 at the mo so it has shot right up! Okay i said right give me your standard rates then cos they will probly be dearer but i would like to know all the same. After laffin heres what he said

    Gas Electric

    1st tier 6.151 1st tier 22.546
    2nd tier 2.580 2nd tier 9.923

Well i can see whats best for me, price protection from them for 2009 seems abit naff seeing as they will also charge a cancellation fee of £55 for gas and £20 for electric makes me think are these going to come down some time in the future. Im posting my opt out form today and going on standard until i see what other offers are around. Oh and i also told him to put a note in my file saying i dont want to go on the new plan in case mine gets lost in the post heheheh.:rotfl:
