Allied - real wood and fitting

We got attracted into Allied carpets yesterday as they had a poster saying 10% off all flooring. We went in to look at the real wood flooring and were told that if we put down a deposit and agreed to have someone come and measure up we could have the 10% off. Anyway, the area we want done is a small room roughly 2m x 2m and a small hallway. The cost of the wood would be no more than four or five packs I would think. Each pack was £51 and with 10% off roughly £45. So we were thinking about £250 plus fitting. The price he came up with was £840.

So sorry to be long winded, but is £600 about right for fitting wood flooring, I know that it is dearer than carpet but thought it was a bit on the steep side. It comes with a 5 year guarantee, which is something. I was just wondering, this being money saving and all whether anyone knew whether it could be done cheaper. Thanks.

I recently asked Allied in Lancashire to quote me to fit a Laminate floor - which I am guessing is a similar labour cost. The estimator suggested that a local fitter would charge less than Allied and my notes have the figure of £8.50/hr - but I don't know if it was Allied or the local (I decided against it anyway).

Definately a case of getting some different quotes.

£8.50 an hour cannot be right for a fitter for real wood. Way way, too cheap.

It depends on exactly which system is used and how it is laid, But you will be looking from about £16 to about £25 per sq mtr for real wood flooring.
However, it's one of those tricky situations, where you might have to pay a whole days labour for this and that would be around the £120 - £150 mark.

Woody is right - My guy charges £20/metre with a minimum charge of £100. Can't help thinkinh Allied are just trying it on.
