Husband has 3 points for speeding

He got three points in June 2006, and I have only just found out. So for the last two years I have renewed two lots of car and one motorbike insurance policies without declaring these points.
I was always under the impression that the police/courts shared this information with insurance companies, does anyone know how it works?

    No.

Insurers can only obtain endorsement information by:

    1) The policyholder disclosing the information or

    2) The Police informing the insurer as part of a separate enquiry, eg if they have stopped a driver and suspect that a policyholder has not informed their insurer of some material information or

    3) Submitting a request to the DVLA. This request must give a 'reasonble cause' for requiring the information and must also be signed by the individual concerned to give consent.

I wonder how many people don't tell their insurance companies then?

The insurer would only have cause to find out if you had a claim, or they needed to see your driving licence.

Many insurers don't penalise for 3 SP points anyway :)

Quite a few. But then the insurer will find out come claim time, and then if it feels that the non-disclosure was deliberate or reckless then the policyholder will find that they have a worthless piece of paper rather than an insurance policy!

I'm more worried that disclosing them now will get me into trouble for not doing so in 2006, IYKWIM.

Providing you haven't made a claim, I would suggest that it won't make any difference. They may, however, charge a slightly higher premium which they would back-date.

As others have said, 3 points doesn't normally make a difference to the quote. Just make sure you declare it at renewal time and change insurers if you are that worried.

He knew. I think it was his OH who didn't and she was the one organising the insurance.

    * agreed, my OH had 3 SP points and even though he was just a named driver, my insurance was affected for 5 years. Although some do look at only 3 years. I was pleased when the points expired.
