Wear normal clothes, arrive early, and change into your uniform. Then do your hair, wash your hands, and go find the person who is training you.

My personal way of talking to customers is uhmm... bordering on the way you would speak to a child, very clearly, as simple as possible and always remember to smile. ALWAYS say hello/hi/good morning etc when a customer approaches the counter, its important you make eye contact but try not to stare. When taking money from a customer confirm what they have given you eg "that's a £20 note" and when giving change always always always state how much change you are giving back eg, 'there's £5.62 pence change and I've put your receipt in the bag" it saves so many potential misunderstandings. Oh and another major no-no is putting the customers change down on the counter, you must always place it into the customers hand even if it means waiting for them to finish faffing with their bag/satchel/briefcase/purse etc

Honestly though, its not that hard. You will be taught these things as you go along and no-one is going to shout at you for getting it wrong on your first day. Enjoy it, there's *so* much to take in you wont remember half of it by the time you get home, but thats normal and they will expect it.

I have to say - it is so lovely to hear a young person wanting to do a good job. I have had some terrible experiences with some young people working in some stores as they just didn't give a monkeys and basically couldn't be bothered to be polite.
I hope i don't sound condesending but you sound like you really care and in my opinion you will do well just because of your attitude - you want to do a good job and regardless of your lack of experiences this should put you in good stead. your manager will know you are starting your first job and won't expect miracles, but with your posiive attitude I think you will do really well!
  • Be friendly and sociable. People like nice people. Offer to do tasks before being asked.

If someone gives you a £20 note, say something like "that's a twenty, here is X change". Don't let people have the chance to slip you up with change.

Quick way to tell if a note is real (it's not 100% but its good). Feel for the raised "Bank of England" on the note by pulling it through your fingers. Feel for the texture (it shouldn't be too slippy- notes are made from printed cotton not paper).

Good luck - I love greggs food personally!

Thanks for all the lovely replies and advice and comments.

Its not the best job in the world i know but it is a start. I left school last may and went college for 3 weeks but did not like it so i dropped. Ever since ive been applying for jobs - now ive got a weekend job at greggs i am really pleased.

It will also be good as a reference when i apply for other jobs as i am looking for a part time job 3/4 days a week monday - friday as i would like one day off as i would like to be able do things also.

Thank you sooo much anyway x

hey, it's not a bad job for your first one, I started in a shoe shop and was crapping myself (age 14) just treat everyone as if they are you best mate (for young customers) or your aunty/uncle/grandparent (for older ones). smile, it makes all the difference, and if you get an awkward customer ( it will happen sometime) just think to yourself "you're a sad, sad individual, I pity you.... " looking down on your customers with contempt is allowable very occasionally!

I cannot afford it. But i will be having alot of dental treatment soon. And it would not be good having time off work would it?

I would also only like another part time job because i would like time to myself. I do like to go out with my friends you know. And maybe if you read my first post - im working saturdays and sundays. Then theres another 5 days in a week, so i would like work 3 or for days a week.

And thank you wish, Its a start for now i agree :)
