Firstly sorry for making another thread.
Im just looking for some advice/tips/things i should and shouldnt do.
I start my first job on friday. I forgot what time , not a good start right? I was half asleep when they rang to change my shift so im going to nip the local greggs where i went for my induction.
Anyhow - Its a weekend job, and the personnel is going to teach me how to use the till.
Im really nervous and i was wondering has anyone got any tips they could share please?
I know i must be polite, smile, use my manners, be on time - or abit earlier, be hygienic (sorry about my spelling then!) etc.
And i was wondering is there anything else i should and should not do?
thank you xx

Good luck stokechick!
Take a notebook with you to write down how to do things if necessary, so that you can refer to them later if you've forgotten.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Thank you very much for the good luck. And i did not think of that thank you.
Also silly question but what should i say when i serve a customer
"Hi can i take your order please" and then they say there order .. then i say for e.g. "thats 4.50 please"
politely and smile ..... but personnel/the manager will hopefully give me some tips.
Thank you for the replies so far - id like to go in with a bit of knowledge of what to do etc.

"Can i help you?"
"Who's next please?" in a crowd of a que.
"Good morning!" Smile*
"That's £4.50 please"
"There's £5.50 change. Thankyou"
The trainer will probably have you 'shadow' a member of staff so you can watch how they do things and copy.
As you are working with food i would go easy on the makeup, and remove nail varnish and jewellry. Also keep your nails short. It makes you look 'cleaner' when serving even if it's not company policy. Also you will probably wear some kind of hat, so take a bobble to tie your hair back with if it's long enough.
Wear flat shoes! You will not be used to being on your feet all day;)
Contratulations on your new job."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0 -
One more tip-DON'T let your mates come in to chat to you and if you're meeting one for lunch meet them around the corner. Busy shops don't appreciate non-buying teenagers taking up customer space
Best tip is smile and look interested-you'll soon get into the swing of it.
If you are popping in to check your start time-Say-"I just want to confirm the start time" rather than "I forgot" -sounds better !

MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Thanks for the congrats etc.
Also - another thing.
They said no visible piercings are not allowed - which i fully agree with. I have my tongue peirced though, and i was wondering do you think i will have to take it out before i start?
Im asking as ive read on the net that it takes less than one hour for your tongue piercing to heal up, so i would not be able to take it out then back in etc.
Thank you for the replies also. I was going to call up the manager where i went for my induction to check, i forgot her name which is not good at all. So i will politely ask for her
Thank you so much for the replies as i say, they are greatly appreciated as i am so nervous.

Also forgot to add - about my hair being back.
I have been given uniform. Its brown as they are currently changing uniform throughout the whole greggs in different areas, it is so horrible LOL.
They give me - a shirt thing, trousers, like an apron kind of thing where it goes over your head - through your arms, a viser ( i think thats what they are called) and an hair net.
Sorry for the silly questions. I do not want to make a bad start on my first day. But also, we were told on the induction ( i say it was an induction - it was in another greggs in town where i wont be working, we filled some forms in and she showed us the till quickly). But anyway - if we have a fag (which i dont smoke) we have to change our top. So i was wondering silly as it is - is it ok to put my uniform on before i go work? Like at home because i will be getting a bus there. But of course i wont be smoking as i quit last year luckily
Thank you very much x0 -
If taking a break in the staff canteen, don't leave your cup for other people to wash up.
Don't ever screw up your uniform into a ball, then pull it out and wear it at the last minute!!
When speaking to other staff, don't "shout" across at them,go over to them to speak.0 -
Thank you holly - I was going to take a bottle of pop so it is easier:).0
