Can a pc also be made wireless like a laptop??

Nope. You'll get a CD with the adaptor to install on the desktop that will install the drivers to make it work and more than likely a program to run to show wireless connections within range. Install it all, through the software tell it to connect to your wireless network and put in the passkey that you should have set up on the router for the other computers to use and bingo it should work fine.

sorry but does that mean I don't need to put the netgear software or the virgin broadband software onto the new computer even though both the hard cable and the ethrenet cable from the router will be going straight into the back of the new machine?

You do not need to install any software, if your new computer is going to connect to the router using an Ethernet cable - just plug & go!

There is no netgear software to go on the new PC if it is being conencted to the router via a cable. Also there is no need to put any VirginMedia software on.

Once you connect the ethernet it should just work, if it doesn't run the network connection wizard.

Ok I think I've made a boo boo, I've checked the wires in the back of this computer and this is how it's set up. The virgin broadband is going direct into the computer, then there's an ethrenet cable going from computer to the netgear router, there's also a usb cable going from computer to the router. It's all very confusing, I remember when I first got the broadband I had to run their software disc to set it up on this machine. Then later on I bought the router and I had to put the software on this machine for that too. I am collecting my new pc tomorrow and will be trying to set it up over the weekend. I have bought a wireless usb thing for the old computer and that will go in the bedroom for my daughter so I hope it will all work out OK or I'm stuffed. Will I have to send myself all my internet explorer favourites?

If you are talking about Virgin cable.

Virgin modem -- router wan port
router lan port -- pc

-- = ethernet cables, not usb.

If you're using a wireless usb adapter you'll probably need to check that your PC has USB 2.0 ports rather than USB 1.0.
