New fence - treat or don't treat? brush or spray?

Looks like the storms in Jan/Feb & the fine weather this weekend has given lots of us the same idea... I've just had my back fence replaced and am trying to decide whether to paint it or not? & if I decide to paint it do I use a brush or a sprayer?
The guy who put the fence in said the panels & gravel boards are treated & won't need doing for a few years but I've got a grape tree to re-attach to 2 of the panels which I won't be able to paint in a few years time without disturbing the tree again so do I paint the panels now or leave it?
If the best advice is to paint now, do I use a brush or a sprayer? I've got 8 new 6x6 panels, gravel boards, a gate, 3 old panels & another gate still to come. Everybody is warning of overspray & problems with using a sprayer with even the slightest of breezes so the old brush method looks best but whilst the exercise will help my waist line it'll also kill my knackered knee's, back, shoulder & neck!! There's only a parking area on the other side of the fence & I can move my car but I don't want paint on the few plants I haven't managed to kill in the garden!!
