Can anyone help? I have a talktalk email account and if I send emails - even replies - to friends with ntlworld addresses they never get there and about 3 days later I get this message

The reason for the problem:
5.4.7 - Delivery expired (message too old) 421-'aamtain03-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [62.24.128.253]'

What can I do & does anyone know why it might be? I get their e mails with no probs.

It's possible (in fact probable) that your address range has been flagged as a source of email spam and everyone on your subnet has been marked in a spam blacklist/blocklist such as those operated by Spamhaus.

You should be able to check if it is here:

    http://www.spamhaus.org/

I've seen this happen in the past with clients, and the block generally tends to vanish after a short while.

However, one remote possibility is that your PC is owned by a botnet and is spamming without you being aware. But if you've got your PC tied down in terms of good security (AV, spyware, firewall, fully patched OS) it's more likely to be someone else in an IP address range.

We have the same problem but are on the receiving end (or not as the case may be!). We have an NTL account and some people cannot send messages to my OH but strangely can send them to me on the main address. No help as we never got to the bottom of it but just to let you know you are not alone!

You could try re-routing your outbound mail through a different smtp server. You can usually use any smtp server.

eg, instead of smtp.ntlworld.com being in your outbound server settings, enter one from the following list:

Wherever did you get that idea from? You can try it but it will not work.

Why? I have mine going through different smtp servers for different reasons. Yes, some require authentication, but others do not.

A simple search will find you smtp servers you can use.

tru if no authenication is reqd by server or you have made such arrangments
but i pay my isp to take care of my mail so i have a contract with them, i wouldn't trust an unknown 3rd party with my mail

I'd be astounded if there were any ISPs who allow relaying of mail from other than customers of theirs. Certainly, there isn't a single one on the list at the URL given which does.

You could help out by naming one or two of these smtp servers.

Google Mail will act as an excellent smtp server and is useful if you need to send ntl email from your laptop while travelling. There is a validation process to go through before you can use it and Google even makes a backup of your sent items for you.
