Menopause and the Mirena Coil?

,I am 47,and had the mirena coil fitted for heavy periods-it worked brilliantly-thanks Doc!I got my life back!(In case anyone asks,I had it fitted in hospital at the same time as I had a bladder repair.,)
The thing is,as I don't have periods now,how can I tell when i am going through the menopause? What are the symptoms?
My consultant told me about a year ago that it would take me through the menopause.
I have just started feeling hot around my neck, chest and shoulders, all of a sudden. It's intermittant, can happen about 5 times a day and lasts a couple of minutes. It has come on really fast. It's not really uncomfortable as I have seen other people going through, and I don't get red.OH says I don't feel hot.
I also wake about twice in the night feeling like I am lying in a litle heated patch,i am slightly clammy in neck area etc,but not sweating. Is this the beginning? Will it get more intense?
I have put on a bit of weight last 3 years, but i stopped working and have gone from very active to very inactive.I am a great believer in good nutrition, and am far from perfect but strive to improve my diet all the time. Are there any foods I should avoid?
Also, how should I change my diet if so? I am in the process of cutting out tea and coffee at the moment for health reasons, which is\making me sleep brilliantly (anyone know any good coffee substitutes, found redbush tea but not got coffee sorted out yet).
I have tried googling but not come up with any info, what else can i expect? I am fairly ignorant about the subject.

Sounds like it could be, hollydays. Not everyone sweats with the hot flashes, and I'm sure there are varying degrees of heat (pun intended!). I went through the hot phase recently, and I don't think I'm out the other side yet, so I can't tell you if it gets worse. It does seem to hit the upper body most, as you say. My colleague used to look like she was about to burst into flames - and apparently felt like it too!0

Yes,and it would be nice to know whether I am going to burst into flames,or just remain on a slow simmer lol0

I had the Merina coil fitted about 16 months ago and was told that periods would probably cease; which they have. With regards to your flushes and indeed your age, it may well be the menopause.0

Hi Hollydays - Have you asked your GP for a blood test? They can usually tell from that....
bad days I could generate enough heat for a small town!!!
best wishes0 -
No,nobody said I would need one.I am off on holiday on saturday,i will get one after that x OMG i am going somewhere hot!!
Last evening,I had about ten in an hour...whew..I am worn out..0 -
Try some cold water in a plant mister thingie (you can also buy water in spray cans but they are £££££) also natural clothing rather than anything nylon - mmm what else?? Spicey food and alcohol best avoided (great tip if you are going on holiday!!)...showers instead of bath?? & above all try to relax and have a great holiday
best wishes xx0 -
I have got one of those mineral water sprays, I had forgotten about,I will pop that in my case- I suppose I can't take it through security at airport.
I can probably manage to avoid alcohol, though I may treat myself to 1 glass of wine as a one-off.0 -

Just to update,I had the blood test which did indeed show I am going through the mp,although by now I am in no doubt anyway! The hot flashes suddenly stopped for the last few weeks, and I am "only " getting the psychological symptoms (which are by far the worst),but are very scary! Whole little bits of your memory go totally missing! My doc says the mirena only helps with your periods during this time.
The water spray thing has helped tremendously.0 -
This is really interesting- I am 46 and I too think I am starting the menopause. I get really hot , v emotional and sometimes get the feeling that it "is all coming on top" , horrible feeling. If I go to the GP will they do a blood test with the result straight away?0
